OUR MISSION
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
The Lake Superior Water Trail Association (LSWTA) is a nonprofit association organized exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes. In cooperation with the State of Minnesota, we work to:

Establish a non-motorized state water trail with access points and campsites on Lake Superior, from St. Louis Bay to the Pigeon River on the Canadian Border.

Educate paddlers about safe, responsible use of the Water Trail.

Enrich that experience through interpretation of the natural history and cultural diversity of Minnesota's North Shore, both past and present.

Protect and preserve the natural resources of the North Shore.

Promote awareness of paddler's needs on Lake Superior, and provide a unified voice for paddlers to governmental units and other organizations.

Maximize public access to Lake Superior, while seeking to protect private property.

Maintain a strong, member-supported Lake Superior Water Trail Association

Groundwork for the LSWTA began in 1991 when a small group of kayakers saw the need for a water trail along the North Shore. Back then it was a unique concept to have designated, water-accesible campsites and rest areas along scenic waterways. These founding members worked with the Minnesota Parks and Trails Council and in 1993 the state legislature passed an act to create the Lake Superior Water Trail. In 1995 the group formalized, incorporated the LSWTA of MN, and obtained 501 (c) (3) status. A partnership formed between the LSWTA and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Together the LSWTA and the DNR have:

Developed a pilot section between Gooseberry and Tettegouche State Parks, and published a map of that area in 1996.

Expanded the pilot section from Two Harbors to Cook County to include 9 individual and group campsites, and numerous rest areas, launch sites, and emergency landings. In 1998 a more detailed, second edition map was published.

Established relationships with other state agencies, cities, businesses, resorts, and home owners along Minnesota's North Shore.

Formed a membership of more than 100 individuals, families, businesses, and organizations.
